OpenSUSE 12.2 Released

OpenSUSE 12.2 has been released. Chock full of features and speed-ups, this latest version of OpenSUSE has embraced GRUB2, Plymouth, and has taken the first steps in the direction of a revised and simplified UNIX file system hierarchy.

The main features of OpenSUSE 12.2 are as follows -


  • Linux kernel 3.4 - has a faster storage layer to prevent blocking during large transfers.
  • Systemd 44 - enables faster booting.
  • GRUB2 is now the default boot loader.
  • Plymouth 0.8.6.1 - provides flicker-free transitions and attractive animations.
  • GNOME 3.4, XFCE 4.10, KDE 4.8.4 - The latest and the greatest desktops.
  • XOrg 1.12 - with support for multi touch input devices.
  • GIMP 2.8 - the redesigned, user friendly GIMP.
  • LibreOffice 3.5
  • and latest versions of lots more useful software.

The OpenSUSE 12.2 release will be supported for 2 release cycles + 2 months.

If you are using OpenSUSE 12.1, it is possible to easily upgrade to 12.2.

openSUSE Tumbleweed users who have a proper setup don't have to do anything special to move to openSUSE 12.2 as the project provides a rolling updates version of openSUSE containing the latest stable versions of all software instead of relying on rigid periodic release cycles.
