Recognizing this facet, the Free Software Foundation (FSF) has teamed up with the Free Technology Academy (FTA) to provide world's first master's program on Free software.
FTA is a joint initiative of several educational institutes from three different countries (The Netherlands, Spain,and Norway). It aims to contribute to a society that permits all users to study, participate and build upon existing knowledge without restrictions.
The FTA consists of an advanced virtual campus with course modules which can be followed entirely on-line.
The learning materials are all published under a Free license and can be accessed by anyone, but learners enrolled in the FTA will be guided by professional teaching staff from one of the three participating universities. The professional support provided by the FTA costs around € 380.
The masters level program conducted by FTA is quite flexible. The students can choose to enroll for a specific course module or for the whole program. The FTA learning methodology allows learners to define their own study schedule - with the aid of asynchronous communication tools (online chat, mobile phones, video conferencing etc), few deadlines, and activities that can be joined at different dates and times. This model allows for anyone to join FTA courses, regardless of their location and job, as long as they have regular access to the Internet.
